Putting Ideas into Practice
G M Akand Abir completed his Bachelor of Architecture in May 2021 from The Pennsylvania State University. He is originally from Bangladesh and later moved to Toronto, Canada. Now he resides in State College. He has dreams of becoming a successful licensed architect in Canada and eventually moving back to Bangladesh to try and change the style of architecture there.
His work often comprises 3 things: human interaction, light and incorporation of nature. With these principles of design he has won awards in Rome and has earned top grades at Penn State University projects. He hopes to one day open up his own Architectural firm in Bangladesh and help improve, affect and change people’s lives. .
Abir won a design award for a project in Rome, Italy in 2019. The 6 person group was asked to design a bath-house at a Roman Emperor’s Villa. Abir’s team won first place in the Piranesi Design Competition and was awarded full scholarship to a master’s program in Rome. Abir then went on to design a Boutique Hotel in the heart of the urban landscape of Rome for his school project.
He is currently the Art Director of the Bangladesh Cultural Club in the Penn State. His responsibilities include designing the stage, the photobooth and any other decorations that might be needed for a successful event. This keeps him busy outside his studio work and he gets to experiment with set design as well.
Abir has studied architecture in Bangladesh, Rome and is currently studying in Pennsylvania, USA. This diverse set of locations helps him think carefully about projects from a different point of view. He can implement strategies that were used in different parts of the world for a better design.
